Star Tutoring: Parents and Their Children
Star Tutoring: Parents and Their ChildrenIf you are looking for a way to help your child excel in school, one of the most effective strategies you can employ is star tutoring. There are many parents who feel that star tutoring is nothing more than highly paid school tutors that are only interested in profit and not in the education of your child. But what exactly is star tutoring?Star tutoring is an educational system that has been put into place in the United States for the past 10 years by organizations known as Star. These organizations have been able to leverage the resources and experience of some of the best teachers and tutors in the country and have arranged them into a system that makes it possible for parents to get some of the best tutors in the country without breaking the bank. The tutors that are given access to star tutoring facilities are all teachers and the fee for their services is extremely low, as is the amount of time required to get a quality education from the m.Star tutoring is the fastest growing tutoring business in the United States. It is not unusual for star tutoring clients to leave a month after their first visit to one of the various star tutoring centers around the country. And this is something that any parent with a child that is struggling in school will understand. As part of the process of getting a child off to a star tutoring center, parents must sign a contract that outlines the requirements for that child. In these contracts, the tutor will set out the expectations for the student and the tutor itself. The tutor will also require that a parent gives the tutor access to the home computer so that the tutor can look at and analyze a student's progress at home. Then, on a monthly basis, the tutor will hold an office meeting with the parent to go over all of the progress that has been made with the child in the month since the tutoring started.A final detail that you need to be aware of is that there is a set price for each o f the services that you will be receiving from the tutor. This price will depend on what the tutor has to offer and it will also depend on the tutoring's level of difficulty. Most star tutoring centers have 'low'medium' pricing. The process of star tutoring is not difficult, but parents will need to spend some time talking with the tutor and their team. While the tutor is not 'paid' by the hour like a school teacher is, the tutor will be receiving compensation for every hour that they spend teaching a student. The tutor will make up the difference between the cost of the tutoring service and the hourly rate that they have agreed to work for by charging a fee that is based on the child's needs and his or her individual abilities.Parents should take a moment to research the right tutors for their children. A parent should be clear about what their child needs and how much he or she requires in order to meet those needs. Parents should be flexible when it comes to the schedule, but a hi gh quality tutor will only work with the student who has earned the right to work with them. All in all, star tutoring is an excellent way for parents to receive tutoring at an affordable price while also earning high quality education for their children. Parents can get the same benefits that they would get from paying hundreds of dollars a week in tuition by enrolling their children in star tutoring centers. With star tutoring, parents can turn their situation around and get some much needed help for their children.

?? Alternatives to University your Child May Not Have Considered
?? Alternatives to University your Child May Not Have Considered Alternatives to University your Child May Not Have Considered Itâs Results Day, and that means itâs time for celebration. The end of your childâs A-Levels brings with it the end of their schooling. Theyâre about to start an exciting new chapter in their lives. We think that warrants a glass of champagne or two!But once the bottleâs run dry, and your child has had time to reflect on their grades, their thoughts (and yours) will inevitably turn to the future. While university is often a popular choice for A-Level students, it isnât always the right fit for your child. If your child has decided that university isnât for them, then there are a number of great alternatives that they might not have considered. Here are some of the routes they could takeâ¦Apprenticeships Apprenticeships are rapidly growing in popularity, and an increasing number of opportunities are opening up.Essentially, an apprenticeship offers your child the opportunity to learn on the job. Theyâll earn a wage, gain valuable experience, and end up with a vocational qualification at the end of it.Itâs a fantastic first rung on your childâs career ladder that can set them up for the rest of their lives. Here are some reasons your child should choose an apprenticeship...The MoneyUnlike university, where every penny parents earn somehow ends up in their childâs pockets, apprenticeships provide your child with a wage. The minimum wage for an apprenticeship is lower than that of a standard job ( £3.90 per hour), due to the fact that your child is also earning a qualification. Note, however, that apprentices often earn as much as £4,000 more a year than new graduates. That small amount of money is still enough to help your child become more independent. Theyâll be able to contri bute to rent, food, bills, and possibly be able to start saving a bit of money. This will teach them how to budget and handle their finances responsibly, skills that will be invaluable later on in life. The WorkWe spend most of the week working or sleeping. Itâs probably safe to say your child has had plenty of experience sleeping, but working might be a foreign concept to them!Working towards an apprenticeship will introduce your child to the working world. Theyâll learn how to manage their time, juggle different tasks, and communicate with fellow employees. All of this will be incredibly useful when they finally start developing their career.Your child will also gain work experience. If youâve ever helped a young person apply to a job, youâll understand how useful it is to already have experience. When your child embarks on their career theyâll already have some of the skills and knowledge they need to succeed. The QualificationOne of the best parts of an apprenticeship is t he fact that your child will come away with a qualification at the end of it.The type of qualification will depend on the level of apprenticeship your child does, but they range from National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) through to BTECs or even Foundational Degrees. These qualifications help set your child apart when they come to apply for jobs.Other BenefitsThere are plenty of other benefits associated with apprenticeships, especially compared to university. The lack of student debt is a big one. An apprenticeship also helps your child get their foot in the door of a large business. This increases the chances of them being hired by that company once their apprenticeship finishes.Ultimately, an apprenticeship is a fantastic alternative to university, and your child should definitely consider it.You can see a list of available apprenticeships here.Internships Internships are similar to apprenticeships in that they offer your child the chance to gain some work experience, and potentially earn some money. The difference is that they generally only last for a short length of time, and they donât always pay.Despite this, internships can be a strong step towards your childâs chosen career. It can provide them with contacts and teach them important work skills.Hereâs why it might be worth doing an internshipâ¦The ExperienceWork experience will be crucial when your child starts searching for a job. A lot of vacancies require previous experience, even the so-called âEntry Levelâ jobs!Getting your foot in the door can be difficult, depending on how competitive the industry is. Having any experience at all may be enough to set your child apart. The experience your child gains during their internship will give them an idea of what to expect from their chosen career. It might further boost their love for it, or it might make them realise it isnât as great as they thought. Either way, it helps them make a choice about their future. The ContactsInternships are a great way for your child to meet different people. Theyâre likely to interact with people from all across the business. Interacting with professionals is a little different to interacting with classmates, and so this will help your child to develop their interpersonal skills and teach them how to communicate more effectively in the workplace. These contacts can help provide references for your child should they need one, and could also introduce them to job opportunities. Some internships also offer your child a mentor, who will help them develop and provide insightful career advice. The SkillsA lot of young people entering the workplace are woefully underprepared for the skills required. Schools generally focus on the academic side, and overlook core skills that are needed for working environments. An internship will help your child to develop various different skills, including time management, prioritisation, and organisation. It will give your child a taste of what itâs like to work in a professional environment, ensuring they can jump in at the deep end when they start their future position.Other BenefitsLike apprenticeships, an internship doesnât cost you anything (other than perhaps travel costs). Compared to university fees, itâs basically free. Your child will have no student debts.Internships are often used by large companies as part of a larger recruitment process. If your child impresses, they may be invited to apply for a full-time position, or even offered a job on the spot!Internships are a good alternative to university. You can find some internships to suit your child here.Working Depending on your childâs chosen career, it might be possible for them to simply start working. Not every job requires a degree or advanced qualification. Some simply need A-Levels, others just GCSEs.Thereâs no reason why your child canât simply skip over the university or apprenticeship stages of development and start their first job.It can be difficult to find a position, but there are a lot of benefits to be gainedâ¦The IndependenceThere comes a time where every child wants to become more independent. Most of the time, their parents feel the same way!Unlike the other alternatives to university, starting work can provide your child with the independence they crave. Theyâll be earning a proper wage, which means they can contribute to rent or bills, or even save up for a place of their own. If theyâre truly desperate to flee the nest, they can possibly find somewhere to rent.By starting work right away, your child will become much more independent than other people their ag e, and can start getting their finances in order. The MaturityWhile most teenagers believe themselves to be mature adults, thatâs often not the case. Most people donât truly mature until theyâve started work.If your child is still a little on the immature side, then starting work could well be the kick they need to become a functioning member of society.Working will force your child to adapt to adult life fairly quickly. Theyâll need to manage their time, maintain professional relationships, and learn to cooperate. This will lead to a more well-rounded person, ready for the challenges that adult life presents. The CareerIf your child has a career in mind already, and there are no barriers to that career (doesnât need a degree, for example) then it makes sense for your child to start their career path as soon as they can.Entering the workplace straight after finishing their A-Levels will give your child a head-start over those who go to university or do an apprenticeship. The s ooner your child can get started, the sooner they can work up the career ladder and get to where they want to go.Other BenefitsWhile diving in at the deep end and starting a job can be a scary prospect, it could be the push your child needs. It can set them up on their career journey, providing them with the independence they need and want. There are plenty of job boards out there, so get looking!Gap Years Gap years have a bad rep. People often imagine lazy teenagers wanting an excuse to go on holiday. However, a gap year actually has the potential to add a wealth of unique experiences to your childâs CV, increase their confidence, and make them more independent. As long as your child is doing something constructive with their time, and not simply lounging in the sun, then a gap year can be extremely beneficial for a number of reasons...The ExperiencesLife isnât all about work. Even though travelling might not help your child get on the career ladder, it can offer them once-in-a-lifetime experiences that theyâll never forget. For that reason alone a gap year could be worth pursuing, but a lot of kids who do a gap year also spend time working or learning a new craft. The experiences gained by working abroad or by learning a completely new skill will help your childâs CV stand out from the rest.Working in a foreign country can be challenging, but thatâs why future employers will va lue it so highly. The Self-SufficiencySo far in their life, your child has relied on your for their survival. Youâve ensured theyâve been fed and washed, youâve helped them get to places on time. Theyâre now at the age where they need to take responsibility for themselves.Gap years require a great deal of planning and organisation. Your child will need to arrange their accommodation, food, work, and budget. Theyâll have to dive in at the deep end, and force themselves to become independent. Theyâll have to do all of this while in a new country, with no friends or family to turn to.Itâs a challenge, sure, but itâs one that will make your child a well-rounded member of society, ready for the trials of adult life. The CultureOur world is becoming increasingly connected, and itâs now more important than ever to appreciate other peopleâs cultures and backgrounds.By doing a gap year, your child will be immersing themselves in a different culture. Theyâll have to adapt to another way of life, possibly even learn a new language! This will help them massively in the future. It will make them appreciate different peopleâs backgrounds, and teach them how to communicate with people from different cultures.Other BenefitsA gap year can be a great way of recharging the batteries, while also building up work experience and learning about different parts of the world.Your child will come back more independent, more confident, and ready for what the adult world will throw at them. You can find some great gap year ideas and opportunities here. What Next?As you can see, university isnât the only option for your child. There are lots of different alternatives, ranging from apprenticeships to gap years. As long as your child makes the most of any opportunities theyâre given, theyâll get something out of them. For now, give your child some time to rest and reflect on their successes. The world can wait a little longer...
Worst Studying Environments for Pre-Business School Students
Best/Worst Studying Environments for Pre-Business School Students pexels.com Cons While some background noise can be nice, coffee shops can also get to the point where they are somewhat distracting, especially if your business studying requires you to be reading a lot. Coffee shops often are playing music, and if the speakers are bumping, you might not be focusing as well as youâd like. There is also the chance that you will easily run into someone from school that wants to talk, leading you to have an unexpected time lapse of chatting it up instead of getting to work. Library: Pros Whether at your campus library, your future business schoolâs library, or your local public library, libraries can provide excellent environments for you to get your studying done. They are quiet, sometimes offer free snacks, and are surrounded with other people who are also trying to get their work done, thus influencing you to be productive instead of slacking off. This can be a great place to go when you just cannot focus at home, and makes it easy to research and write papers since thousands of books are at your disposal. Libraries are also great if you donât have your own computer or printer, since you can use their facilities to get all of your work accomplished. Cons Libraries are great because they are quiet, but this can also be the downfall to this environment. If you are in a room of almost complete silence for too long, you will start to go a little crazy and may not be as productive as you would hope. Libraries are great for short term sessions of intense focus, but if you try and draw them out too long, it will result in a crash and you will have to leave since you wonât be getting anything else done once you hit that point. In your apartment: Pros Studying at home means you donât have to make yourself presentable to the outside world. On rainy days, it can be nice to be snuggled up under your covers, in your pjs, studying for your upcoming exam. This is the prime location for when you feel self-motivated but donât really want to go out anywhere. Youâll be saving money as well because when you need a food break, you can just go to your kitchen for a snack, whereas when you are studying outside, you have to then go buy something. Cons While itâs nice to be comfy in your bed while you are studying, there is a point where you can get too comfy, where you end up napping instead of studying for your business class. Staying cooped up inside can also make you become bored with studying more easily, and it can be harder to resist the Netflix since itâs right there at your disposal, and no one is going to judge you for going on there besides your inner self. The problem with staying in is also the fact that your roommates might be loud and annoying, and unlike at a coffee shop or the library where you can just move seats, at your place you will be kind of stuck. These are just three of the many places for you to get your studying on. What Iâve noticed is that a variety of study environments can be helpful to keep yourself at your most productive potential. Chapter 3 - Chemistry Matter and Change - Chloroplasts
Chapter 3 - Chemistry Matter and Change - ChloroplastsChapter three of Chemistry Matter and Change looks at the role of chloroplasts in this book. The relationship between chemistry and biology is something that we are all taught at school. Chemists learn that the building blocks of matter have chemical units that fit together in specific ways. While these units have a natural order, there is an inherent relationship that exists between them.Chloroplasts are examples of organic molecules that occur naturally in plants. They play a significant role in the biological system by providing the raw material that plants use to produce organic compounds that plants use to build tissues, bones, hair, and skin. For plants, chloroplasts play a role that is similar to that of cells within our bodies, providing the raw material necessary for a cellular function. As mentioned above, chloroplasts play a role similar to that of the mitochondria found in the cell nucleus. In fact, mitochondria play a similar role in our body, but they do not require chloroplasts to survive.Chloroplasts supply nutrients to the plant. Chloroplasts are located in the outer parts of the leaf where light is available to photosynthesis. The energy from sunlight provides the power needed to help the chloroplasts perform their normal role of carrying nutrients.Chloroplasts also play a role that we can think of as being somewhat analogous to that of a skeleton within the body. They provide mechanical support and aid in the circulation of nutrients through the leaves. As chloroplasts work on behalf of the chlorophyll molecules that they carry around the leaf, they take in minerals that are needed to facilitate the survival of the plant. By taking in food, the chloroplasts help makeup for the loss of certain minerals from the leaves that are not used to provide the needs of the plant. In this chapter, we've seen the relationship between chemistry and biology. Chloroplasts form the basis of a cell, both in pl ants and in our own bodies. We've also discussed the role of chloroplasts in a human body.
Pros and Cons of Immigrants Learning English
Pros and Cons of Immigrants Learning EnglishIn the recent years, there has been a lot of research conducted to evaluate the pros and cons of immigrants learning English in Canada. Immigrants to Canada have been given a chance to enhance their language skills and learn to speak English, which is not common for native Canadians. This has been good for Canada as a country because the immigrants make good citizens. Not only that, the immigrants themselves have benefitted from the English learning program.Immigrants, who study English here will have a good career here. They will get employed on the job, have a nice and prosperous future and can even be respected in the business world. They also have a better life because they are able to speak English better than the natives and thus, they are able to converse with natives better. They will be able to be accepted in the local culture as well. They are also more receptive to the newcomers, who can speak their native language.Immigrants to Canada have to complete an interview by the immigration department of Canada. The immigration officers will consider the applicant's race, income, education, employment history, age, health status, business background, etc., and will give you an estimate of whether or not you should be considered for the visa.It will be easier for immigrants to adjust to their new environment if they have a basic knowledge of the native language. This will help them to adapt easily to the society, where they will have to learn more about it. While natives learn how to say greetings, immigrants will have to learn new words to say and new words that will be unfamiliar to them. In other words, it is important to learn how to converse properly and know how to use the tools and facilities available. When you have successfully learned the language, the immigrants will be more cooperative and give more support when it comes to the social life of Canada. They will also be more productive because they will no t worry about spending their time in meetings and speeches because they have already learned the basics of the new language. There will be less chances of making mistakes and if there are, it will be to their advantage. After all, your accent, manners and physical gestures will still remain the same in English as in your native language.Immigrants are more likely to settle in the country because they will not face discrimination. It will not matter if you are black, white, American, British, Canadian, or European. You will feel comfortable and that is important to survive in a foreign country. The customs and rules of the country will not affect your immigration application. There are many benefits in being an immigrant to Canada. But, it is important to also remember that being immigrants does not mean that you do not belong in Canada will welcome you. The positive things that can come out of the immigration of immigrants are a great opportunity for everyone.

ChaptersWhat Precisely is Kickboxing, Then?American Kickboxing: A Bit of History.French Kickboxing, Savate, or Boxe Française. And Muay Thai Kickboxing â" What Is That?Kickboxing for Fitness. The sport that we call âkickboxingâ actually has a long and complex history, to the extend that it is difficult to call it a specific sport at all. Most of the countries that play it have a different set of rules â" whilst the names that they give to the sport differ wildly too.So, if you were struggling with which style of kickboxing to go for â" either for your physical fitness or for your interest in martial arts training â" then we understand. It isnât necessarily straightforward for those not in the know. But here weâll look at the three main types of kickboxing that you are likely to find in the UK. And whilst weâve added a fourth â" in which you might be a little more interested â" these three are the major styles of kickboxing across the world today. So, letâs learn somethi ng: itâs important to be prepared before you step into the ring! Not really very precise at all. This is the thing. Because whilst going to the boxing gym for fitness kickboxing might sound appealing, sparring in Muay Thai boxing may well sound a little less fun. Weâll come to that precise style â" which uses elbows and knees too â" later on.A Generic Term. But kickboxing begins as a generic term â" one that includes everything from taekwondo to full contact karate, Brazilian jiu-jitsu to mixed martial arts, kung fu to British kickboxing. Each of these individual fighting styles has its own set of rules â" and very rarely do fighters from different styles fight against each other. This hasnât always been true, however. During the sportâs relatively brief formal history, the different styles have come about through their contact â" literally â" with other martial arts.Only since the sixties have different styles we now know as kickboxing â" such as the American and the Dutch, for example â" developed. And, now, the style that most of us know as âkickboxingâ per se, is the American variant. With the establishment of institutions such as the International Kickboxing Federation, a global set of formal rules were developed that promoted competition and brought the sport into the public eye in the west. Now, of course, youâll find kickboxing classes all over the place. And whilst a lot of people learn the sport to take part in proper competitive bouts, most use it for the great workout it offers â" for strength conditioning and for improving stamina, self-confidence, and a general fitness level.(You can read more, by the way, on the health benefits of kickboxing in another article.) Kickboxing can be a pretty brutal sport.American Kickboxing: A Bit of History.Kickboxing itself started, we can say, in Japan in the 1950s. Whilst karate was widely practiced and publicly enjoyed, it wasnât much of a thing at the time to make actual contact with your opponent. This changed when Tatsuo Yamada decided to bring Muay Thai into the ring. With the combination of the full contact elements of Muay Thai and the grace and dynamism of karate, a new style was born. This was kickboxing â" and the problems of definition, formal rules, and style were born right there with it. With each fighter taking different bits and bobs from the two different styles, it was never exceptionally clear â" in the first days at least â" which moves were allowed and which werenât.Kickboxingâs first ruling body was set up in Japan in 1966 and, after this, the sport went global. By which we mean, it went to those countries primarily who did not already have an established tradition of martial ar ts â" such as the US, where this mix of karate and Muay Thai became hugely popular. The Rules of American Kickboxing.Letâs take American kickboxing as the fighting style to look at in a bit of depth, as this is what we generally are referring to when we talk about kickboxing in the UK. Here's a full-blown explanation of the kickboxing rules too.In American kickboxing, the emphasis is on reflexes and agility, and, as such, the ring is kept quite small to ensure close contact between the fighters.Where American kickboxing differs from other forms of kickboxing is that you are limited to the use of fists and feet and you are prohibited from using the low kick. People have said that this rule â" no kicks below the waist â" is a deliberate attempt by promoters to ensure that fighters perform dramatic high kicks. The torso and head are the only legitimate targets for strikes â" and no throwing is allowed.American kickboxing developed out of the Japanese style of full-contact karate a nd western art of boxing â" during the sixties and the seventies. Here are the biggest names in kickboxing. Unlike many of the other kickboxing styles in the west, it is not based on an Asian martial arts technique. Rather, it is a specifically French phenomenon dating back to the nineteenth century. That mea ns that you wonât find savate everywhere in the UK. Unlike its American counterpart â" and the hugely popular Muay Thai â" French kickboxing is a little more niche.Whilst that doesnât mean you wonât find it, itâs a fact that is important to remember.A Distinct Sport.Savate comes out of two traditions: the style of hand-to-hand street fighting that was popular across France in the nineteenth century, and traditional English boxing.Whilst it came to be a respectable sport in the 1920s, when it featured in the Olympic Games, like all folk sports the rules differed from region to region in France. Whilst some traditions favoured open-hand slaps, others developed rules and fighting techniques that permitted the knee strike and strikes to the groin. Punching was not necessarily allowed because, under French law, this was seen as a weapon. In France, originally, the kick â" including low kicks â" was the most important weapon. And it wasnât until French fighters had organised bouts with English boxers that savate as we know it now was born. What to Expect in the Ring.Whereas American kickboxing is close contact, savate demands a bit of distance between the fighters. Itâs actually thought of as âfencing without the swordsâ, as it has developed into a style with elegance, thought, and athletic moves: the style favours excellent footwork, jumps, and movements. In the ring, savate fighters wear special shoes that allow kicks with the toes. The roundhouse kick, the reverse, and the shin kick are all popular moves for the feet, which it involves familiar moves with the fists too: the uppercut, the jab, and the cross. When fought well, it is actually a beautiful spectacle. And if you are looking for a total body workout, savate is the place to come.Check out our beginner's guide to kickboxing! And Muay Thai Kickboxing â" What Is That?Of all the different styles of kickboxing found in south-east Asia â" Pradal Serey in Cambodia and the âBurmeseâ or Lethw ei style from Myanmar â" Muay Thai has become the most popular in the western world.Ascribe to it historical reasons, perhaps â" as Muay Thai, as youâve seen, was one of the great inspirations behind what we call kickboxing generically these days. Itâs a combat sport that uses shins, knees and elbows, and fists â" as well as the clinch or hold.Muay Thai is almost as popular in the UK as American kickboxing. Yet, given the intense contact that it requires, injury is pretty common. Different types of kickboxing have different rulesElbows and Knees. The main difference between kickboxing and its Thai variety â" âMuay Thaiâ, by the way, literally just means âThai boxingâ â" is in its use of lots of different parts of the body. You are not just limited to feet and fists as you are in French, American and western kickboxing more generally. In the same way, Muay Thai is not a sport that has been refined into something gentler and more palatable for a general audience. It remains intense, full contact and the risk of injury is high: you really need to be in exceptional physical fitness to perform it well.Check out the gear you'll need for kickboxing!Kickboxing for Fitness.Whilst these are the three main styles, a lot of people these days prefer to do kickboxing just for fitness. How to Score a 5 on the AP World History Exam
How to Score a 5 on the AP World History Exam Sign up successful 2. Know the World Map In order to get a solid grasp on the material youâre learning, you should first become familiar with the world map. Pay special attention to places that have changed over time. For example, âMexicoâ used to be called âNew Spainâ and âEast Pakistanâ is now âBangladesh.â Iâve seen plenty of students confused because, not realizing the territory has been renamed, they canât find New Spain on the map! To make sure you have a good geographical foundation, practice drawing the world map a few times (or at least filling in a pre-drawn but blank world map). Make it a contest with fellow classmates or friends to spice up this activity. Also, there are plenty of online sites to test your âmap and geography knowledge.â (Try Lizard Point Geography Quizzes.) 3. Make A Timeline Many teachers will tell you âdates arenât that important for the exam.â In essence, I agree with this statement, especially the farther back in history you go. However, itâs important to know the general chronology of historical events. Hereâs why: The AP World History Exam places emphasis on global interactions and change-over-time (there is actually a âChange-Over-Timeâ essay), both of which require having a reasonable idea of when things occur (not necessarily dates) and what else is going on in the world simultaneously. This emphasis makes sense: People, countries, and continents are not isolated. They may exist separately but they fluctuate together, constantly evolving. So, to really understand âtime,â I suggest a timeline. Now, because so much happens in our worldâs history, itâs important to have a big timeline. If thereâs room in your house, put up a roll of paper from one of the wall to the other. Then you can make a line and label events as you go t hrough the world history course. Make it interactive by drawing pictures to go with significant events. If you donât have room in your house, you can go online. I recommend Prezi.com (or a similar site with a wide open canvas that you can zoom around on, add information, and upload pictures and video). 4. Supplement Your Reading If youâre taking a class, you will almost undoubtedly be working with a history textbook. However, words on a page often have trouble sticking in our brains by themselves. What you need to do is find movies and short videos (use Youtube) that you can watch after youâve read about an event. Then go back to the textual information and reread it, checking to see if the way you imagined the event matched up with what you saw. This helps you more than you realize. By combining reading and watching, youâre first creating an original virtual reality experience, then comparing that with the media youâre viewing, and then, during the second read through, youâre analyzing the differences. This process interweaves many facets of your brain enabling strong recall and memory with the information youâre learning. Yes, it may take a little extra time to read, watch, and then reread information on one particular concept. You definitely donât want to do this with every significant event. To start, I recommend choosing 10 important events (spaced out over our historical timeline) that interest you. How do you choose the events? If you have an AP Review Book, they will have an âimportant eventsâ list at the end of each unit, which are generally separated by time periods. Otherwise, go online, type in âAP World History Important Dates,â and choose some from a list that comes up. If youâre stuck, hereâs a good starter list (but remember there are so many to choose from): 2000 Judaism begins w/Abraham 1320-1340 Spread of Bubonic Plague 1029-258 Zhou Dynasty 470-430 Golden Age of Athens 610 Rise of Islam 1492 Columbus expedition 1600-1690 Scientific Revolution 1770 Beginning of Industrial Revolution 1948 Creation of Israel 1959 Cuban Revolution Donât forget to put all the events you spend extra time with onto your timeline. Finally, remember that world history is just one, long, ongoing story about the human race. Try to put yourself in the shoes of those you read about and recognize that understanding the concepts is far more important than knowing exact dates.
